Abstract

The current living model, together with population growth, makes the solid waste production increase as time goes on. Besides producing high quantities of waste, we discard the possibility of reintroducing these materials in the production chain, wasting raw material and creating severe environmental problems such as irregular waste disposal, polluting soil, air and water. It’s necessary to change our action to reduce the generation and also to value the waste that we produce, introducing it in the recycling chain. This work aims to demonstrate the experience of deployment the selective collection program accomplished in Turvo, a municipality of Santa Catarina with around 12.800 inhabitants. “The program of Selective Collection – SE-PA-RE: Select, Participate and Recycle” began in July 2019. For completion of this work, a desk research was conducted aiming to raise information about municipal laws with regard to selective colletion. Furthermore, a research in loco was made, involving visits to the Collectors Association and the town hall, more specifically in the environmental department, with the intention of gaining real data related waste collection and sorting operation, work methods and the results obtained with de program.
