Abstract

Performance evaluation aims to assist the decision-making process by providing a comparison between elements with different levels of success in the field of management. With regard to selective collection systems, this approach is relevant because these systems are still quite incipient in Brazil. In this sense, this paper aims to compare the performance of selective collection systems in Brazilian capitals in order to verify whether the performance is associated with belonging to a region with greater or lesser economic and social development. This study also establishes a secondary objective aimed at verifying whether there are correlation trends between performance indicators considering groups of capitals that collect more and recover recyclable waste. To achieve these goals, this study used a method consisting of three steps. Among the conclusions, it is possible to mention: it is not possible to generalize that the selective collection systems in the south and southeast regions are better than the systems in the northeast and central-west regions; São Paulo – SP is in a group that presents low performance, together with all the capitals of the North region; and in the group of capitals that collected more than 8 kg/(inhabitant x year), the greater the amount of recyclable waste collected, the higher the recovery rate of such wastes, which is an indication that more structured and with greater collection potential can also ensure higher recovery rates.
