Abstract

The consumption pattern of society results in the generation of expressive amounts of Urban Solid Waste (USW), which must be properly managed and disposed by municipal managers. This article aims to analyze the management of USW in 5 (five) of the 18 municipalities of the Association of Municipalities of the Mountain Region (AMURES) in Santa Catarina state, which are: Lages, São Joaquim, Correia Pinto, Otacílio Costa e São José do Cerrito. This is a quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional research. Data collection took place through the application of a questionnaire regarding the generation and collection of waste, to the transport used, information on selective collection of recyclable materials and organic waste, and the main challenges encountered in its management. All municipalities presented per capita generation rates considered low in relation to the size of the population. The collection of USW in the municipalities of Lages, São Joaquim, Correia Pinto and Otacílio Costa cover more than 90% of the population. Lages has the greatest coverage and collection frequency, and the largest collection fleet, as it is the municipality that generates more USW among the 5 (five) analyzed. Regarding the collection of recyclable materials, only Lages, Otacílio Costa and São José do Cerrito perform this service, under different conditions of frequency, coverage and responsible entity. Although the main difficulty faced in the management of USW is the deficient system of environmental education, since this makes recycling actions feasible and reduces the amounts of USW destined for landfills.
