The progressive increase of solid waste generation and its inadequate disposal is considered one of the biggest environmental and social problems of today. Recycling, which is inseparable from collection, is one of the treatment alternatives that can help minimize the environmental impacts caused by solid waste. Waste pickers are primarily responsible for recycling in Brazil. Recycling, which is inseparable from collection activity, is one of the treatment alternatives that can help minimize the environmental impacts caused by solid waste. The study aimed to verify the socioeconomic conditions of recyclable material waste pickers who are linked to associations in the metropolitan region of Cariri Cearense. To this end, we applied forms to 22 associated waste pickers. It was evidenced that 68.1% are men, between 23 and 64 years old, where these professionals are exposed to unhealthy working conditions having monthly income below one minimum wage. In addition, they do not use personal protective equipment during the collection activity and report pain and tiredness. Therefore, despite the existence of current legislation aimed at the insertion of these professionals in municipal solid waste management, they do not receive adequate assistance from the municipalities, thus hindering the work and evidencing social exclusion.
