Abstract

Sawdust from wood processing is a solid waste commonly used in large quantities for landfills. However, a sustainable alternative is to subject this waste to the composting process, together eith a nitrogen source, in this case, cattle manure. The composting process makes it possible to reduce the mass and volume of waste used and converted into a stable organic compost easily assimilated to the soil. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of the composting process with sawdust and bovine manure, as a carbon/nitrogen source, respectively. The composting process was conducted in a pile format, in the experimental area of UTFPR-FB, during the months of September to December 2019. To assemble the pile, 19.8 kg of cattle manure and 7.8 kg of wood sawdust were used, adopting a waste ratio of 3:1 (v:v). Weekly monitoring of the process took place with revolving and sampling for analysis of parameters of pH, temperature, water content and volatile solids content. The temperature of the battery was checked day. During the monitoring of the process, the parameter of pH, water content and solids content showed adequate development, with final values of 8.2, 46% and reduction of the solids content of 40%, respectively, obtaining a final odorless compound suitable for use. The composting process was monitored for 85 days and proved to be efficient in obtaining a final compost that could be used as an organic fertilizer beneficial to the soil.
