Abstract

The impact of construction on the environment occurs throughout its production chain, from the extraction of raw materials to demolition. This study aims to point out some important aspects that help in qualifying a steel structure as more sustainable. Some parameters were referenced, such as a material life cycle assessment and an AQUA-HQE certification. Through a survey of scientific research and publications, they were pointed out as differences between the construction systems of steel and concrete structures, as they are currently used. At the end of the studies, it was selected that despite the metallic structures presented in the numbers, factors that contribute to sustainability, such as its greater potential for recycling, re-approval and industrialization, which exhibits a higher quality of materials, or the iron extraction process is very devastating. While the concrete structures generate a great environmental impact throughout their life line.
